BDSM is a lifestyle that involves terms such as slave, submission, and Master. These terms could possibly turn some in the African American community away from BDSM. But for one New York City Black couple, Mrs. Squirt on You, 39 and Mr. Cunning Linguist, 37 those terms do not deter them.

The married pair has been active in the BDSM scene publicly for 4 years. Their introduction to the lifestyle came through the novels of author Anne Rice.

“I started to share the stories with my husband, and he said oh, so what do you think if we check out this club. And then we went to Paddles,” said Mrs. Squirt on You.

Paddles, known as the ‘friendly S&M club,’ is located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City.

In the BDSM lifestyle, people choose lifestyle names that reflect their personality.

“Obviously we are not in a time and or place where our sexuality and lifestyle might be accepted by any and all. So therefore the usage of a name creates some anonymity that allows even possibly a little more freedom that one is normally used too,” said Mr. Cunning Linguist.

Black Beat is an organization for people of color in the lifestyle. It has local chapters throughout the US and is a way for people to network and meet like-minded people in safe environments.

“In BDSM, we (Black people) are not well represented. So Black Beat gives you a place to call home. Which can make things a lot more comfortable when you go into munches,” explains Mrs. Squirt.

Black Beat gives Mrs. Squirt the feeling that there are strength in numbers and this helps her and Mr. Cunning Linguist navigate through some of the more difficult situations many Blacks face in the lifestyle.

“I’ve been to larger clubs where predominantly white population if you will and people of color where referred to as the ‘N word’ and my ‘house N word,’ etc, which of course would be very offensive. You wouldn’t find that walking with Black Beat. There is strength in numbers, “ says Mrs. Squirt.
